We’re not fans of giving gift cards as gifts – people forget to use them before they expire and if a company goes bust, they’re often rendered useless – but you can use them yourself at restaurants or retailers you were going to visit anyway, and combine them with other offers to give yourself a double discount, as a gift card works just like cash. This is particularly good at Pizza Express, which nearly always has offers.

Another way to get discounted gift cards is via Zeek – an online marketplace which lets shoppers trade gift cards for hundreds of retailers. You can use it to flog unwanted cards for cash, or buy discounted cards, usually at 2%-25% off.
