I think you have imagined the part about your tax code being reduced.

As with most things tax the onus is on you to notify HMRC.

    What is your income?

I believe you could opt to pay as you go, i.e. reduce your tax code and tally up at the next self assessment, most of course who still collect it just pay it back when they do their self assessment.

It was ludicrous from the beginning, it's only been for about the last 18 months that you can actually find out from the benefit office if the child benefit was being claimed. Prior to that they couldn't tell you if you weren't the claimant due to data protection (not sure how they got around that but they seem to have).

That's what happens when brainless/clueless politicians announce policies on the hoof without actually understanding the consequences and implications.

Just like the removal of the personal allowance for those with taxable incomes over £100k which has worsened the shortage of doctors and dentists.

Libdem policies - say no more.

Contact HMRC and ask to set up a payment plan, perhaps offering £50 per month.

I think on £60k a year they should be able to afford more than that.

What a ridiculous assumption to make , you have no idea how big my family is or our outgoings, we are now losing £80 a month on top of any payment plan I have to agree to. As I said we are a single income family and my travel alone to work is £400 before I earn anything. I also have debts from immigration legal fees to pay.

Doubt they will accept £50 long term. £600 per year will be 6 years to clear. And likely to owe again for 17/18.

For HMRC to consider allowing you a repayment arrangement they will need details of your Income & Expenditure and an offer to pay a set amount by direct debit per month.

I would be amazed if they accepted £50/month as this would mean it would take you 70 months to clear the debt which is excessive.

If you could make a lump sum payment when you make the offer , which brings the repayment length to something more reasonable they may consider your proposal.

Are you serious? I was in the same situation last year. When I asked HMRC to setup payment plan for me, they have looked at my income (above £60000) and outgoings and refused, saying that I am not earning enough money to make repayments and they couldn't find ways to cut my spending. Person, who decided that single income slightly above £60000 is high for big family is at least not very smart... At worst he simply hate people...
