I assumed they would need to take everything, but thinking about it they are only going to scrap it anyway, good idea thank you, I will keep the veg in those and just cook the chicken and fish, x

Actually don't you have to keep the freezer on for a certain amount of time for it to cool down? xx
    Hi

Just think of the time that the frozen goods will be out of the freezer ... it'll likely be far less than the time it takes to get it from the supermarket freezer to your own ... if everything is in one stack/pile in a cool position and also well insulated (bag & duvet) the thermal mass will keep everything well frozen for the amount of time it'll take you to wipe down the inside of the new unit & let the refrigerant re-settle before it's switched on for the first time.

If you do a quick search for the user manual on-line it'll probably give information on how long the manufacturer recommends that the unit settles before it's turned on, from memory the time differs if the unit had been transported upright (1-2Hrs?) or laid in it's side in a car (Double this ?), but if it's being delivered for you you'd expect that it would be done properly (/upright) ...

  • If the food is still rock solid when you come to put it back in the freezer, it'll be fine. If it has started to thaw then put it in the fridge and treat as 'fresh' (ie use within 2-3 days).

If I take something out of my freezer in the morning to use that evening, it's often still icy when I come to cook it - and that's in a warm house. If you put the food in a cold area (boot of the car is another good spot) then you should have several hours to play with. The only thing I would worry about is ice cream.

Ice cream hardly ever makes it into the freezer trailingsprout it's eaten the same day I buy it so I don't get it often, that's one less thing for me to worry about!!!!

Probably too late to be of use now but you could possibly have used a spare suitcase stored out in the garden to store your food in. Wrap stuff up in newspaper first to keep it 8nsulated.

Thanks Primrose but panic is over now, delivery was late and I couldn't put food back in till this morning, but I only had a gammon joint and fish to worry about both are now cooked and made into pies, pasties and slices (separately of course!) , all the rest stayed frozen thank goodness.
    Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for letting us know that all is well. So many people ask for advice and then don't bother to let everyone know how things have turned out.

I echo this. There are so many helpful people on this forum who have helped people get themselves out of all kinds of difficulties but a large proportion of people rarely bother to say “thank you”.
