Any ideas for a christening buffet?

My son is being christened on Sunday. My mum and I are doing the buffet, there is about 100 people coming with adults, teens, children and babies. We have about £150 to spend and apart from butties, pizza, quiche and sausage roll I am stumped as to what to provide. We have all the trays, plastic cutlery and paper plates and white tablecloths its just the food does anyone have any ideas? im not much of a cook and as I say its just me and mum doing the buffet so I would like to keep it simple, but I would be so embarrassed if there wasnt enough food for everyone.

  • What I did for my little ones christening was a selection of cold meats, potatoes, salad, coleslaw, pasta salad, cous cous, savoury rice, pickles, french stick, cheese board, olives etc and a selection of desserts you should be able to do this for way under £150.00 and I find people appreciate this a lot more than sausage rolls etc.

The other option which I have also done which is fab is to beg steal and borrow some slow cookers of friends and rellies and cook a curry, chilli, goulash and some rice just leave it on low and let people help themselves, provide tortillas and nann bread for people to mop juices up with.........................this goes down extremely well:T

Why not pop along to your local freezer centre (u know the one). They have a lovely range of buffet style nibbles and all you need to do is bung them in the oven.
    £2 savers club. No.90. Aim £500.

Ooh when is it your next party sounds delicious just my kind of menu. Sometimes I add something hot with a cold buffet like jacket potatoes or even huge shepherds pies you can't beat homemade with a cheese topping thats gone crunchy in the oven.

Devilled eggs are nice too. Hard-boil eggs, cut them in half, scoop out the yellow, mix it with mayo+curry powder, then either spoon it back in (or pipe it if you're posh)

I've seen in a supermarket a huge pizza too. Big rectangular thing. In the parties section. If you can find these, then cut them into small squares as nibbles. Or make your own! Just pastry base, tomato/garlic/onion base and topped with cheese/mixed herbs.

If you're going down the sausage roll route, don't forget vol-au-vents. Make up some simple fillings: egg/mayo, tuna/mayo/sweetcorn, chicken/mayo, ham/mayo.

Also, sausages on sticks, small meatballs on sticks.

Felafel for veggies? Make small ones on sticks maybe - stick them near the dips.

    Pineapple/cheese on sticks.

Quiche/flan is lovely, if you can find a good source, but they can end up looking a bit grotty when most slices have gone, they can be pricey and they can be a pig to cut right if you've not got a good knife.
  • Thanks everyone lots of great ideas.IrishEyes I will deffo try some hot dishes im a dab hand at "scouse", its a liverpool recipe like hotpot with no lid on.And I will be putting lots of things on sticks (my older son would love to help with that.)The chef where my mum works is doing the quiches for me so they should be ok.I can knock up great pasta salads, but I never thought of cous cous thats a good idea. Many thanks guys!
