1 Year Interest Free - Special Offer Date
Options
In August 2006 I purchased a three piece suite from Land of Leather on a 1 year interest free option. At the time I was told that no reminder would be issued. It wasn't until the 17th August 2007, when I saw the first payment taken from my Bank Account that I realised I had missed the 'special offer date' by 5 days. I quickly telephoned the company concerned and was advised that I now had to pay a total of £2709 made up of £1568 the cost of the furniture, £639 interest for the year and £501.88 for payment protector.
I advised the company that I could pay the £1568 in full, however they would not make any allowances.
I also wrote a letter of complaint, but no joy. I do not understand how this company were able to issue credit of this kind without at least issuing a reminder for payment at the end of the term. Any other companies I have dealt with have always issued a reminder. I feel this is a very good way of making lots of money quickly. I do not believe that every person diarises their payment for the year, especially elderly people.
I eventually got £172 refund from the company on the payment protector, but only after I asked for it. No offer was made on their part.
If anyone has experienced anything like this before, please let me know if you were sucessful in obtaining any compensation.

Why do you deserve compensation?
You were told that no notice of payment would be sent to you and you had your interest free year and 5 days.
You did not pay on time so now have to pay the price.
Sorry if I appear to be nasty but it was your fault that you did not pay on time and therefore IMO no compensation is due to you.0 -
so many people get caught out by this kind of arrangement but really you only have yourself to blame ,you were clearly aware of the t & c from day 1.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I'm not really trying to get at the OP, but it does seem like land of leather acted reasonably responsibly by drawing the OP's attention to the fact that there would be no reminder at the time the OP originally took the credit. At least they did not bury this on page 27 of the small print!
However, I agree that the terms of the contract were clear, they are not unfair and you should have kept a careful watch on the payment date. I never take advantage of these offers because I know that I will always forget!
