Is Taxsebate.co.uk ok?

My husband received a letter from Taxrebates.co.uk about claiming money back on his work clothes and told to fill out a form. They appear to have his national insurance number so assume he has provided it at some time. Anyone know if they are okay? or have any advice.

Is he not able to do it himself?

He's paying someone a hefty commission to stick a stamp on an envelope. He needs to stop giving out his NI number to strangers!
  • He really doesn't even know if he ever gave someone it but I assume so as its on the letter he received. Yes of course he can do it himself, well I will do it for him via the government website. I just wasn't aware of whom this company is and wanted to check whom they were. Now after some research have discovered myself that it is a third party company and they would get commission. So have shredded the form and doing online this evening.

They are one of those companies that act just within the law whilst charging high fees for doing very little. My advice is to bin the letter and forget it. One point of caution. You need to find out if your husband gave them his NI number or not. If he did, has he signed anything? You don't want to find out at a later date he has a contract with them.

Indeed, if he's unwittingly signed up with them, then HMRC will send any repayment to them (whether or not they submitted the claim) and for future years too. He may be best advised to phone HMRC to check they don't have an agent logged down on his tax account.

These companies will charge to do what is very simple, and free, to do yourself. He may even find that the charge ends up being more than the tax saving. He should tell them to take a hike.
