Working for sainsburys and tesco together

Hi All,
I have just started working for sainsburys part time for 12 hours in the weekends. The store i work for has advertised another shift of 16 hours but the hours dont match with my childcare, I am available to do 5 hours from the advertised job. Do you think it would be appropriate to ask my manager, if i can add those 5 hours to my existing permanent contract? I have just started to work there so I am not sure about how to go ahead about this or should i wait until my probation.
The other option for more hours will be be to look for one more job in tesco's or asda. Can i work for two supermarket's?
Thanks,
Nadiya

You can ask for anything. They may be totally up for it, or they may think that the remaining 11 hours would be difficult to fill on their own.
What does your contract say about working for 'competitors' or second jobs in general?0 -
I haven't received my contract yet. I applied internally as i worked for sainsburys in december as Christmas temp in another store. The manager interviewed me and next day he offered me the job with immediate start date. He said he will get all the paper work to the store.0

How did you find that job? Online?
I could do with a few hours over the weekend to make some 'P'.0 -
As they've already advertised the 16 hour role I doubt they'll offer you a part of it, as that would not be fair on candidates that have already taken the time to apply for the full hours.
I'd establish yourself in the store first, then let them know you're looking for more hours. They're more likely to find something that fits for you once they know you're reliable and a valued team member.0 -
I doubt that they will let you work for a competitorSealed pot member 095 SPC No 7 £578.32

Why, because Sainsburys might have a secret shelf stacking technique that they don't want Tesco or ASDA to know about?
Conflict of Interest more likely. Usually its discouraged or sometimes put in your contract not to have a second job with a company seen as a direct competitor, however this is open to interpretation even where it is allowed by the first company.0 -

Couple of years ago I remember the T word came up in my Sainsbo's interview - whatever I said they liked I think I said I'd rather work here then there and was told that was the right answer.
Could you explore another store of the brand you are with? I remember turning the job down and them saying I could apply to other stores within the close proximity rule etc with pretty much guaranteed acceptance for a short period so wonder if you could try that route first for getting different hours.
You need to check your contract.0 -
Depends whats in your contract, a bit awkward if a fellow colleague were to pop in for something and happen to see you working there.
Theres no harm in explaining toyour manager if theres any OT that comes up to ask you or you could have a word with the manager on another dept eg GM
I dont know what hours you could do but if you say I may be able to offer suggestions.0 -

This is two grocers though, not two deadly rivals with secret formulae to steal or missile plans to microfilm.0
