Is this still safe to use?

Just unearthed an unopened bottle of Waitrose Easential Sunflower oil at the back of my cupboard. It has a date of December 2015 on it but cant see whether this is Use By or Best Before.

Am aware of dangers of botulism in oil. Is it safe to use? If not, how do I dispose of it? Pouring oil down the sink isnt a good idea.

  • If you decide not to use it, just put the whole unopened bottle into your normal bin.

Have checked a bottle of oil in my cupboard and it's a Best Before date not use by so should be fine.

The oil will have left the factory sterile. Botulism is a risk when external "enhancers" are used - typically garlic - and stored in an anaerobic environment.

The worst that can happen is that it will taste rancid (unlikley), so give it a taste test before committing it to any dish.

I agree with VfM give it a small taste test perhaps warm a little up and dip a bit of bread in it ,also give it a good sniff I think you would know if it was rancid or not by the smell If its unopened I can't see it would have gone off though
