    No - he won't because the op has been making payments 'this way for a couple of years' and he/she will not have to pay 'all of 2016/17 tax due' on 31st January.

    Hopefully you have not confused him or her

    Yes - and if it hadn't been for him the tax year would still be 24th March. How would we have coped with that?

    Can you imagine the major mess they would make if they changed the date to a more sensible 31st March? It just doesn't bear thinking about!

    Hmmm - perhaps you were not around when, in 1996/1997 the self-employed moved from a PY basis to CY (almost)? Basically this meant adding two years profits and dividing by two.

    It was all going swimmingly until someone realised that 1996 was a leap year and 1 divided by 2 became 365/731. Lots of calculator usage that year.

    I would not need to bang on about it if HMRC weren't such numpties and fixed it. Then these threads would not crop up non-stop at this time of year.
