Tax return - fees whilst student.

I'm currently filling out my self assessment tax return for 2016/17. I began my employment in August 2016 and was a student prior to that. I have been paying professional fees on a monthly basis, both whilst a student and once I began employment, this is with an approved professional body listed on HMRC's list.

My question is for: should I enter professional fees I have paid for the entire tax year or just since starting work? Thanks.

I would say from April as you must have eligible as a student otherwise you wouldn't have been paying them so entitled to the tax relief

It certainly used to be for the whole year as I claimed for professional fees both at the student rate and the employed rate in the year I completed my Masters and started work. Atter that first year I just had my tax code adjusted each year to take the fees into account.
