Can you remortgage if you are mortgage free?

Options
We are in a fortunate position of being mortgage free but looking do some home improvements. Can we remortgage to finance it or would we need to take a loan out? All loans I've seen are 5/7 years term and quite high interest, I was looking for a longer term repayment.
