Cleaning solid plate on electric cooker

Hi

I have jut moved into a flat and I bought a second hand electric cooker. I have never had nor do any of my family or friends have electrical cookers so I am a bit stuck on how to clean the top. The plates are leaving a mark on my new pans!

Thanks

I have one, inherited it in our new house and plan to change to gas as soon as we can afford but for the time being I use a cream cleaner (for example jif - or cif as it is now known) and a scourer pad

Clean the enamel with your usual cream or liquid cleaner as you would any hob top. The plates I just wipe over with a damp cloth, if you use cream cleanser on the plates they will go powdery when dry. You can get a specially soaked cloth for Kleeneze or Betterware to bring the plates back to a new looking black but I've never bothered.

If you are not used to cooking on leccy it is a bit different to cooking on gas as the heat control is not instant and residule heat stays within the plate.
Allow a little longer to bring things to the boil or pre heat.
Turn off the heat maybe 5 mins before you want to stop things cooking and the plate will continue to simmer the pan.
To kill the heat to a pan instantly to stop boil over, take the pan off the hob rather than turn of the plate. HTH

Don't worry too much about marks on your pans. I'm always suspicious of anyonw who's pans are too clean. LOL In the long run your pans stay much cleaner cooking on because they do not get deposited with carbon as they do with buring gas.
