  • A PGCE (secondary) is one year, full time. It qualified me for secondary but also adults, where I teach now. My colleagues did the PTTLS, CTTLS and DTTLS (prep for teaching in lifelong learning sector, cert of... and diploma in..., respectively) but they didn't do it full time. They trained "on the job". ....colleagues with DTLLS may not. Maybe it has changed though.

Also yes, at £10 an hour you are underselling yourself. People will assume you're not qualified or capable or something.

Put ads in newsagents, not just libraries, and sports centres, and shops and supermarkets.

Thank you for above info and advise.

Lots of people tutor via skype and give a slight discount for this - but the trade-off is that there is no travel and you can slot in more classes.......

I've thought of Skype and to charge, perhaps by PayPal?

I'm thinking of doing the same. Presumably your patrons come to your house? What sort of hourly rate is fair?

Any other musical instrument tutors care to comment?

I am a music tutor and tutor mainly from home. There are a few siblings who are involved in other activities so it was handy for the parents that I taught in their home. The going rate in my area is £10 per half hour lesson, but I charge slightly less than this, and offer discounts for families, as I appreciate the cost of living today is high enough as it is. I charge 5 lessons in advance and the student loses the fee if they cancel - encourages them not to cancel!!

I think my rate is fair - I ring around at the start of each term so see what everyone else is charging, but I have kept at my current rates for a few years now.

  • I am interested in teaching literacy and numeracy to adults - I am now looking to complete my DTLLS but as I don't have a level 3 in lit and numeracy - how do I get this qualification? A.Levels for adults are impossible to come accross. Also if I wanted to tutor college students on a foundation course (for those who didnt achieve enough GCSEs to get onto level 1 courses) what qualifications would I need?? Any help and advice would be wonerfull, thank you :)
  • Does anyone tutor via Skype?
How could one charge the student? Via Paypal or credit card?

I did my Level 5 Numeracy through a local college, so look there first. I went straight from GCSE (Level 2) to the Prep for Level 5 (Level 5 Additional Diploma in Teaching Numeracy in Lifelong Learning Sector - what a mouthful!), and missed out the Levels 3 and 4.
The LLUK (lifelong learning UK) website should be able to help you out, I emailed them once and they were pretty useful.

I've got the opportunity to tutor two young lads in guitar, but their mother, quite rightly, requires that I have a CRB Check. Legally, I cannot apply for a criminal record check on myself, so how do I get one?

If you have children you might see if you can volunteer to help on trips, with reading etc at their school. They will then have to get a CRB check done for you. The only other option I know of is to enrol with a tutoring agency, through whom you can organise to get a CRB check done- but it will cost you.

Post 407 above has the link to Disclosure Scotland. I understand individuals can get a clearance through them, but how well a parent would take this I don't know.

It is a pain that CRBs aren't portable (yet) and it's sometimes difficult to explain to a parent that I'm cleared to work at a school or college but not as a "private tutor" as I'm not a company.

It seems specific to Scotland though. It's of no use to me if that is the case.
