What constitutes acknowledgment of debt.

I have posted previously about my debt issue that I am currently facing. Having had debts for coming up to five years now they will soon become statute barred. I was not aware of this when I recently received a big discount offer on the majority of them from the same company. I went on to set up a direct debit without any verbal or written communication of these debts via their website. I also have never nor still to this day made a payment towards them. What I would like to know is plain and simply what constitutes acknowledgment of the debt? Is it verbal communication, written communication, making a payment? As of today I cancelled the payment plan I set up online over the phone but gave no information to Lowell regarding why I cancelled this other than I wasn’t I a position to go ahead with it as scheduled. I have been given so many various answers to this question over the last week and nothing definitive. Hoping that it is written acknowledgment and or a payment that would constitute the acknowledgment and nothing else. Thanks

Than would certainly be my understanding of the law as it stands in England/Wales. An e-mail may count as writing.
It would be best to speak to someone who specialises in Scottish law such as the Govan Law Centre 0141 440 25030
