Him indoors has just bought one of these http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-9521.aspx and is very happy with it for surfing and playing (pointless) games.

depending on what you are using it for, i.e gaming, genral browsing e.t.c you could build a fast dual core baed pc for around £200.

Have a look at this company. I bought a PC from them years ago and it's still going strong. Very well made, but cheap nonetheless:

  • Hi Guys

Right to get a decent sort of spec PC for under £300, the golden rule is, NEVER HEAD FOR MAJOR SUPPLIERS LIKE DELL without first checking the market, this is how big fat cat executives make all their money as people dont know the market well enough, or rather they think the first one they come to is probably as cheap as it will get. Wrong Wrong OMG its WRONG

Secondly, if you go here you'll see a list of about a hundred different desktops all between £80-£310, you can refine the list by brand i.e toshiba, dell, etc. Refine bu price range etc, also if as you said above you dont need a monitor then that will probs knock at least £70 off final price as well. :j

To run comfortably and play sims type games as you said your hubby does (which my increase your price a bit im sorry to say hehe), then you need probably a Dual core 2.4ghz processor or above and 1GB of RAM memory or above (AT LEAST) paired with a decentish graphics card, however the onboard graphics will suffice, they are the key components for the intended use, well by my recommendations anyway, anything above that which is cheap is still a bonus  . But you'll find you need at least them to run a decent spec game. But have a good filter through the above site and you'll be amazed how cheaply they can go for.

Also go to desktop computers on the following site, its pretty much the exact same principal as the above one. You'll be amazed at how high a spec you can get at such a low price compared to if you just strolled into PC world or dell website, and bought one there and then
