MOT Question

My car is due for its MOT in November, does the DVLA send out the booking date or do I need to book it myself? Thanks.

You book it. You pick a garage ... phone them ... make the appointment ... take the car down.
You can get it up to a month before it's due - in which case the new one will be dated 1 year from the old one, so you don't lose out the overlap time. (unless they changed that in the last year or two)

If you're a NI poster you book through the D&VTA. You can do it in person, by post, by phone or online.

You should get a reminder through telling you the car needs an MOT, it should have all the booking contacts on it too.

There is in Northern Ireland, MOTs are carried out by the Driver and vehicle Testing Agency in purpose built testing centres, not be local garages.

It's a very different system than England, Scotland and Wales and one that there have been many debates about which system is better.

If the car is due its first Mot test then it probably needs a mechanic to check it over, e.g. all bulbs working, handbrake and headlight-levels will need checked and adjusted and brake pipes cleaned for the test

Best to use a small independent for this rather than large main dealership.

Also take the car to the Mot center yourself and save some money
  • Book it in now as there's currently about a 6 week lead time for appointments, i booked mine in on thursday and got the 23/11/07 for mallusk

If you book it into Ards you can get it in the next week, i have never had any problems with ards at all, people are always cancelling and if your car is ready and you call the centre sometimes you can get it done the same day or the next day.

Just tried DVTA online and then telephone and only one with spare dates before mine is due on 19th November was Coleraine. I asked for Newtownards as is closest to me and the earliest was 26th November, Mallusk was into December and Belfast was into December. I asked for a slip to carry me over but the lady said they have done away with that now. : (
