Sorry- I missed any notifications about replies on here. There are many helpful points people have made. I want to make it clear that I have worked very hard on my compulsive behaviour and it is not because my money dried up! I have not gambled in any form since April 2017 and not taken on any debt since Oct 2017 (the day I realised I had a problem). This has been through a lot of hard work and motivation- not lack of means. I have sought help through GA and DA and see a therapist weekly.

I'm not sure if I am able to work- I am burned out but have only worked in a highly demanding job for the past 10 years (lots of responsibility, stress and emotions) so I don't really know what it would be like. I wasn't aware of ESA and this does sound like it may be more relevant to me right now. I suspect (and really hope) that once I am made bankrupt and am fully out of my job, that I will feel a lot better. The stress of both of these things is monumental and holding all this together for years has been exhausting (never mind the PTSD!).

With the comments about my CAB adviser. I have just posted elsewhere today to ask if what I've been told is accurate as it's now been 12 weeks since I met with her and I'm no further forward. I've been contacting her every 3 weeks or so and she tells me she's still waiting to hear from my creditors. When I met with her on 2nd Nov, I went with full statements and details of all my accounts (I knew exactly how much debt I was in) she even commented that she had never seen anyone so organised. She told me she would deal with it all- said the process was- she would contact each creditor, telling them I was in difficulty and CAB were managing things and ask for an up to date amount owed. She said once she had that, we would meet again and decide which option to take- which she said seemed to be bankruptcy. She said we'd then fill in a form. The amount of time this has been hanging over me has been so difficult. I didn't realise I could just fill in a form myself. I was just following the advice I'd heard which was to do it through one of the organisations- CAB, step change or Christians against poverty.

Also worth checking your pension scheme through work. If you've got 20 years service, what benefits are available through work? Long term disability and I'll health retirement are both options for long term health issues at my place. Have you been referred to OH?

I've got 13 years service with this employer and I have been working with occupational health. I'm seeing them again next week so I will discuss the options for me with the prospect of me being unable to continue with my job due to my health. Thank you.

The only question asked is whether you have taken advice from someone like this, that doesn't mean you have to go through them to arrange the bankruptcy.

I really hope this new information now gives you the courage to take back control of this aspect of your life and gain some strength from that.

Yes the information had been very useful. I actually feel so annoyed with myself now. I'm usually such a control freak and a 'get it done' type person (hence the burn out) but in this instance I thought for one in my life just trust someone, its her job and she's saying she'll do it all for me. I'm so annoyed that I could have it all done by now and not have had this hanging over me for the past 3 months.

I will get on it today. Thank you.
