First time buyer and want to move to the north!

Hi All,

Me and my partner currently live and work in Surrey but are looking to move to the north. We are first time buyers, have a 10% deposit and are looking to buy and then get a job afterwards (we will still live and work in Surrey until we find other jobs).

Would it be better to see a mortgage adviser in Surrey or in the area that we plan to move to?

Thanks :)

It doesn't generally make a difference except for any really local building society contact. Go with someone who does whole of market and its ok. Personally when we were recently doing remortgage I never even once saw the broker. All done through phone and email. I would say, if you want to meet face to face then u need local one for convenience..

It wont make any odds, but you are going to struggle to get a Mortgage knowing you are leaving your jobs very close to getting the mortgage. Some lenders will also have issues with the commute between the new house and the old job during the interim.

PErsonally I think you are going to be better renting for 3-6 months.

  • I would personally suggest renting in the area that you intend to move to before committing to buying anywhere. Its impossible to get a feel for an area unless you spend a prolonged period of time (months, not days or weeks) there. Also, you're not guaranteed to get a job in the area you want. I would suggest getting the job up north first, and then renting local to the work before looking to buy.

Also, as people have said before, lenders would be likely to question your commitment to the mortgage if you're not working locally, not to mention the issues of leaving your current job around the time of completion (or soon after).

    As stated:

    1. You wont get a mortgage in these circumstances.

    2. You are better off renting initially anyway. What happens if you buy then find you don't like living where you have purchased and want to move to a new area.

  • Thanks everyone.

We would make sure to get to know areas before we move. We would only leave our current jobs and home when we have another job so the mortgage would always be paid.

There's one concern for the lender, you never do.
