  • Thanks for the replies everyone. Seems like I'm being unreasonable then asking for a partial refund after 5 months. I just expect something I bought being told it's good quality to last longer and wanted to change to a different manufacturer of TV as this one doesn't seem reliable.
    I was told by a TV repair guy most of the parts for this tv aren't even made by Panasonic just cheap generic parts so I've learnt something when I next buy a TV I'll look for long warranty etc.
    They should be picking it up tomorrow for repair so I'll wait for that to be done.

    So you should now be aware then that TV's are now like computers. None of them are made by their brand names, they all use components by other suppliers.


    1 or 2 like Samsung and LG make their own screens and but the rest is made by third parties such as Daewoo and others whose names you will never know. So like Dell they just throw components into empty shells to make the final product.
  • Other users citing longer terms of JL and RS, the conditions would still leave the ball in the retailers court on whether to refund, repair or replace the unit. Usually this decision would be made after considering the bigger picture around the customers circumstances though usually at least one repair would be expected to be the most cost effective option.

    OP, I would say that to have the TV collected and returned to you within 7 days is perfectly reasonable and you would need some quite serious mitigation to say otherwise. If the unit is returned and the fault persists you then have stronger grounds to declare lost faith or request a replacement (even then second repair could be insisted on). For your peace of mind, repairs are usually guaranteed for a period of time which is useful if the repair is made towards the end of a warranty period.

    While it is commendable that you recommend retailers with better warranty terms, your post did not apply to the OP of this thread who has already bought elsewhere.

    In addition, the longer warranty terms of John Lewis and Richer Sounds would not have prevented these retailers from following exactly the same route that Curry's did in deciding to repair the item in question.

    So, yes, by all means tell people to buy a TV set with a five year warranty-but do it on another thread.

    On to the original issue, OP you only have the right to a remedy, and a repair is a perfectly acceptable remedy and all you would be offered by any retailer. Don’t worry about the whole 12 month warranty issue, your consumer rights against the retailer will continue to protect you for several years after the warranty has expired and as they will have already had one repair attempt you wouldn’t have accept a second one (although you may have to prove the fault, allow them to inspect it first and will only be entitled to a partial refund)

    It’s nothing to do with making me feel like a better person, my feelings are completely indifferent. I commented because not only did fluffybunny not offer any help but also offered incorrect information. At no point was I rude, I posted a quick but factual response. Not liking what somebody says, especially when they disagree with you does not automatically make that person rude. Joining a thread purely to have a go at someone without even attempting to offer help however would fit into the rude category.

    Should we now as regulars stop correcting incorrect information?

    If they really want to help people there are other boards where the post (or at least the correct bits of it) would have been more relevant. Such as the techie board or the I want to see it, buy it, or do it board where people post looking for recommendations before they make a purchase. Telling OP five months after they’ve bought something “you should have bought elsewhere” offers nothing constructive to the post at all. Much like your post ;)

    The point I'm trying to get across is that in a group discussion with people face to face you wouldn't tell them that their comment was irrelevant. Of course it's good to point out that a poster has given some incorrect information, just do it without putting them down.

    I didn’t put anyone down, I didn’t say the poster was irrelevant, I said their post was, there is a huge difference. And actually in a face to face conversation if somebody was giving incorrect information then yes I would correct them, I wouldn’t be derogatory about it, like I wasn’t here, but I would correct them, and I fully expect to be corrected if I ever get something wrong or give incorrect information, in fact I would apologise for getting it wrong.
  • Anyone who buys a tv from Curry’s wants their bumps read anyway.
