Curry's 5 month old TV broken

I bought a Panasonic TX-55EX600B TV from Curry's on 28th July 2017 for £649
Last week I had problems with it and yesterday it went off completely and won't work.
I spoke to Curry's on the phone today and they said they will repair it, pick it up on Tuesday and return it on Saturday. The issue I raised with them was that firstly it's less than 6 months old and it's broken I don't have any faith in this tv lasting me past my warranty of 12 months. Also the repair doesn't add any extra warranty it will still expire in July 2018
I don't particularly want them to repair my TV as essentially I'll have a reconditioned TV that cost me a fair bit of money. I would like a credit to be used in store at curry's for the current sale price of my TV which is around £649. Curry's say this isn't an option and they will only offer the repair, also paying out over £700 on a TV and we're left with no TV for a week which isn't good enough considering it's basically new
So my question is, what are my rights to take the TV into curry's and demand some sort of refund? The 6 month period I've seen mentioned runs out at the end of this month
Thanks

Refund, replace or repair are the three options available and essentially Curry's get to choose which one they do.
  • The 6 month period determines where the burden of proof lies only.

Currys are entitled to choose the type of remedy they offer. Offering a repair is perfectly acceptable.

I think you'd struggle to argue that 7 days is that much of an inconvenience for a TV.
  • Not much help now but never buy a telly from Currys always John Lewis (free 5 year guarantee) or richer sounds with free 6 year guarantee.
They both price match though John Lewis only physical stores not online too like richer sounds will, so you don't pay any hidden charges for the guarantee.

Richer sounds also do a super guarantee whereby you pay 10% of the telly cost at the time of purchase and get full accidental damage cover and a loan telly should yours need repair plus if you don't use the guarantee they will refund you the 10% back at the end of the guarantee period!

    Can't say fairer then that!

You do realise that even with a John Lewis free 5 year guarantee or Richer sounds free or paid for guarantee (which Currys also offer including the loan TV) they would still insist on repairing the TV in OPs situation. While both shops may have better overall customer service they still wouldn’t just give a new TV or refund without even attempting a first repair.

Also the Richer Sounds paid for extended guarantee does not get refunded after the five years if it is not used, there is an entire thread on the topic in Praise, Vents, and Warnings where people have been mis-sold it on that understanding only to have their refund claim rejected because the refund clause only applies to Hi-Fi equipment and not to TVs.

So basically your entire post was irrelevant and offers no help to OP whatsoever.

On to the original issue, OP you only have the right to a remedy, and a repair is a perfectly acceptable remedy and all you would be offered by any retailer. Don’t worry about the whole 12 month warranty issue, your consumer rights against the retailer will continue to protect you for several years after the warranty has expired and as they will have already had one repair attempt you wouldn’t have accept a second one (although you may have to prove the fault, allow them to inspect it first and will only be entitled to a partial refund)

It was relevant to the OP's concern that the warranty expires in 6 months time. If he had bought from JL or Richer Sounds this would not be a concern.

Also the repair doesn't add any extra warranty it will still expire in July 2018 - Why should it, you were happy to buy a TV with a 12 month warranty and you'll still have a TV withe remainder of your 12 months.
I don't particularly want them to repair my TV as essentially I'll have a reconditioned TV that cost me a fair bit of money. - No, you will have a TV that's 6 months old and been repaired, why should you think you should be better off I would like a credit to be used in store at curry's for the current sale price of my TV which is around £649. Curry's say this isn't an option and they will only offer the repair, also paying out over £700 on a TV and we're left with no TV for a week which isn't good enough considering it's basically new - That's the law I'm afraid, you've enjoyed nearly 6 months of use with this TV and the retailer is entitled to a single attempt at a repair at this stage. Had it happened within 30 days of purchase then you would've been entitled to a full refund
So my question is, what are my rights to take the TV into curry's and demand some sort of refund? The 6 month period I've seen mentioned runs out at the end of this month - At the moment the retailer is entitled to attempt a repair, if this fails in the future then you do have the right to a final right to reject.
    Thanks
As others have stated Curry's are working within the letter of the law.
  • Well to say my post is irrelevant is pretty much why I don't post often on here due to the 'regulars' damm right rude attitude which pretty much puts new posters off!

Currys one year guarantee is definitely bettered by a 5 or 6 year guarantee and the sales guy in richer sound told me it was no TVs too which is why I said that
John Lewis offer an extra guarantee for £99 which covers accidental damage and they will replace without hassle.
but how a 5 or 6 year guarantee isn't helpful is beyond words!

I was stung from Currys once and never again! I always buy John Lewis for electric goods so I if you read my post you would see I said not much help now but I'm future.
So next time the Op will have the option of a longer guarantee free of charge.

Why the regulars on here have this awful attitude I'll never know!
But almost every new poster will comment on it hence why I read and hardly post.
I'm out there's my one post for this year lol
  • In future*

I can't edit using my phone for some reason the button don't work!
  • Depends on the T&Cs of your warranty.

My guess would be that you have no other option to repair it. From what I remember, Currys offer an additional insurance policy which then gives you the right to exchange it. I would suggest that under your warranty you can only get a repair.

I would never spend that amount of money on a TV, however, without a longer warranty or insurance policy....

I said it’s irrelevent because it is, telling OP that they could have had something different from elsewhere does nothing at all to help them in heir situation. If you had posted that as an “in the future this is worth considering” post and also offered them some help it would be one thing but without offering the help it adds nothing useful to the thread.

Again with Richer Sounds, just pop over to the other board and see how many others have been mis-sold the policy on the same basis as you, on TVs you do not get your money back if you don’t use the policy. I have it on my amp from there and the paperwork clearly excludes other items including TVs from the refund. So even the advice you have offered is incorrect.
