Remortgage plus paying lump sum

Hi,
Thanks for any advice in advance.
Wife's mortgage (Nstionwide) is coming to term early March. We want to remortgage but pay 20 or 30k. Thought this would be fine and spoke to Nwide, who said won't be able to do anything until 1st March..
I thought they would at least be able to agree remortgage at today's rate.
Could anyone advise procedure when paying a lump sum at point of remortgage..
Tthx
