Help please, windows won't open up

Options
Microsoft was doing an update and we had a powercut, when it came back on it said "Install Windows - Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer restart the installation." I've tried restarting the computer a few times but the same message keeps coming up. Can someone please help and tell me what to do?

  • Have you got the original Windows installation disc that came with the computer, you could try booting your PC from the disc drive with your installation disc in.

I've not got a disk, I was given a USB stick when I purchased the computer I've never used it but I believe that was a back up for windows but it was windows 8 when I brought it.

  • OK then put you memory stick in your USB port then start Windows but change the boot sequence to boot from your USB drive then your PC should refer to the Windows back up on your memory stick to be able to start up

The USB stick will have various troubleshooting routines on it.
If nothing else works you may end up having to 'Reset' Windows.
That'll keep all your files, but you may have some programs to reinstall afterwards.
But try some of the other options first, like booting into 'Safe Mode'.

ETA: Actually don't think a Windows 8 disk will have the Reset option?
You may have to download an ISO of Windows 10 and burn that to USB and use that instead.

Thanks for the replies but I still haven't sorted it. I've tried a few things people suggested but they haven't work. I can't even get to the start screen it's just a black screen with the message. I've got into the F2 mode that people told me to reboot from via the usb but I was lost in there, no clue at all what I'm doing or what to press to do a reboot so it looks like I have to see what curry's will charge to fix it. So many people online seem to be having the same trouble and this message coming up with a windows 10 update I'm sure it must be fixable in some way, I'm hanging on that hope anyway. Someone's kindly lent me their old laptop, think it's running on clockwork but it's doing the job and letting me get on line to sort a couple of things out. Thanks again for trying, I'm just a techie dunce.

** ASSUMING WE'RE TALKING ABOUT WINDOWS 10** You need "Windows 10 media" whether its a DVD or USB stick, from which you should be able repair OR reset OR restore.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options
Look at option "Use installation media to restore or reset your PC"
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

I'm guessing that you haven't yet created Recovery media.

    You can start here; https://software-download.microsoft.com/pr/Win10_1709_EnglishInternational_x64.iso

Click on and then choose to save.

What's the brand name and model no. of your device?

If you've got another laptop then stick that usb in it and download "Windows media tool" and run it. That will make the USB able to repair your windows install when you boot from it. Ensure you select "Repair Windows" when the install screen appears
