First Time Buyers - 1 Good Credit/1 Bad Credit

Hello,
My partner and I are looking to take our first step on the property ladder. Which sounds great except...
One of us has a good credit score
The other has a poor credit score (Defaulted payment last March, queried with bank as there was payment and got no where. Nevertheless, a big stonking mark on the credit score.)
We're unsure what to do as we do have a combined income of over £50,000, a 12% deposit and the debt has been paid in full. However, looking at agreements in principle online, it will not calculate a joint mortgage with the bad credit score. Only for the one of us with a good credit score.
Has anyone been in a similar boat? What did you do?
Is there anyone who will lend to us?
What should be our next steps?
Thanks!!
