I second this as this is what I'm currently learning how to teach! Skills For Life covers Adult Literacy, Adult Numeracy and ESOL. There are 5 levels, from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 which is equivalent to a C at GCSE. You can do these is numerous locations, not just colleges and there are programmes at various different times and days. The curriculum is geared towards how you can use your new skills in your everyday life and is wholly geared at adults, their lives and interests. :)

It might be useful to post the links to the criteria/eligibility and how to access funding.

I'm a big believer that you changing your everyday career and getting a better job is often the best way to get boost your overall income.
  • In my opinion, you dont need the grades to get most jobs if your over the age of 20-21. Your CV just gets you an interview, its how you perform in the interview that gets you the job

I'm 16, I took my Adult Literacy and Numeracy tests when I was 15, the school made us do it. I passed my Level 2, as did many others, and the ones that didn't are still trying to complete their Level 2 now (having gained their Level 1). As it's worth a B grade and a recognised qualification, it's definately worth taking if you need to boost your CV.
Good luck to all in whatever you choose to do! :)

experience gets you those jobs NOT qualifications. i've got ten top grade GCSEs, four top grade A levels and a first class honours degree but have never been able to get a paid job. mainly cos i'm overqualified for some jobs and others require experience which i don't have.

a prospective employee doesn't care what qualifications you have, they want someone who has done that exact job before and requires zero training.

  • GCSE's, A Levels, Degrees WILL get you a decent job! These qualifications ARE necessary. You wont find a brain surgeon without half decent GCSE's!
More store needs to be placed on education and achievement rather than "they are pointless".

You would be surprised how much we use Math, English and Science in our everyday lives and actually how important they are.

With qualifications like that, you really shouldn't be saying that you can't get a job. Jobs don't come to you, and the world doesn't owe you a living. Honestly, with such evident ability you should have the wherewithal to do something about your situation. Good luck.

i disagree to a certain extent. the majority of skilled or professional jobs require, as standard, decent qualifications. The CV can get you an interview but it is how you then perform.

It depends on the job. Paper qualifications are essential for some roles, but for other experience alone will do it. But it's certainly easier to get an employer to ask you for an interview if you have both.

The Literacy and Numeracy qualifications mentioned are well worth doing if you missed out at school. My son did those, went on to do an Access course, and is now at a good uni doing a degree- but he was only accepted because he had the Numeracy Level 2 qualification, as his course required minimum GCSE in Maths as well as the Access.
