Work out annual usage?

Hi All,

I've only been in my current property for 7 months, but my tariff is due to end in a few weeks.

I know my usage for the past 7 months, but any way to work it out/estimate it for the whole year so I can do a comparison?

Your 7 months is a reasonable mix of summer and winter

Just pro rata the units (not £) ie 7,000 kwh in 7 months is 12,000 in a year
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

This is how my bill pans out over the year
    Jan 16%, Feb 14%, Mar 12%, Apr 7%, May, 4%, Jun 4%, Jul 4%, Aug 4%, Sept 4%, Oct 6%, Nov 11%, Dec 14%

So you can see that 65- 70% of my energy is used in the five months Nov - March and only 30-35% in seven months April to October.

You need to skew your estimates to use twice as much energy in the winter than in the summer rather than just doing a simple pro-rata based on a high proportion of summer consumption..

If you are dual fuel (gas & leccy) then leccy is just a bit more in the winter but gas consumption usually increases dramatically
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Scottish Power does it for me on my bill in the "About Your tariff" section.

"Gas - Your actual usage in the last 12 months
    5,466 kWh
Electricity - Your actual usage in the last 12 months
    1,822 kWh"

My electricity usage is actual over the last year but my gas usage is on the strength of one bill because I recently moved and I didn't have gas at my previous address.

So have a look at your bill.

If you have monthly figures then take July-Dec and double it.

Maybe add 10 -15% on after you have done the above as Jan/Feb tend to be colder than December. If you overestimate by a little, you will have some leeway and may be pleasantly surprised if your usage turns out to be lower than you thought.

You can also try more than one quote with slightly higher/lower usage. You will probably find that the same energy co/tariff comes out on top.
