Hi there,
I’ve not posted in here for quite a while but I wanted to come in and say a big thank you to all of you in here. Eight years ago, yes that long! I came to this forum, desperate for help and hope having been in a position where my debts had got the better of me. Not through reckless spending but by trying to do the right thing by my family and suddenly finding I was drowning. I was so ashamed and at my lowest. At that time, my debts were around £49,000. Seems incredible just seeing that now. However, the support from the forum here, reading other stories and seeing I was not alone, helped so much. I made contact with Stepchange (CCCS) and set up a DMP. I went through a range of emotions and dark times but I stuck at it and now.....have started 2018 debt free!! I cleared every single penny, there were no quick settlements and now...I feel really proud. It’s been a long eight years but I did it.
So, I wanted to say thank you to all that helped me along the way and hopefully by sharing a little of my story, it may help others who are just starting their journey.
I had no family or friends to help and have one income. I was fortunate to have promotions in work which meant my payments to debtors could increase and I would encourage people to submit their PPI claims (and not take no for an answer) as this too helped a little along the way.
Above all, hold your head up high, you are not alone and you can do this.
Thank you all again....I can breathe again now.
Hugs to those that need it.
Xx

Well done. Don't forget to post this on the debt free roll of honour too

Hope your debt free life continues and that you at least treat yourself to a little something as a big pat on the back£2 Savers Club for 2022 #120 -

Well done :j
I remember that feeling - I didn't owe as much as you, but it was longer ago, and numbers generally weren't so big then. No CCCS etc then, and I had never heard of a DMP, but like you, I knuckled down and paid off the lot. As you say, over the years, pay etc can improve, children get older so you can work more hours, get more qualifications, leading to promotions etc all of which help pay it off quicker
Hope the next phase in your life is brilliant! Hope you have lots of fantastic plans for the future
