Reviewing a short contract

I have been given a short legal contract to sign which will allow me to work as an associate for another company ( commission only ) . The actual job sounds fine and the director seems good but basically as I result of someone who took my money over 20 years ago I am very cautious...
The contract seems straight forward and is only 5 or 6 pages long. I asked a local solicitor and he said £250+vat to review it.
Is that about right ?... as I am not earning at the moment it means I will have to fork out that first hoping I will earn something later ?
thanks
