Home made carpet cleaner?

I saw a thread but last post was 5 years ago, basically used to use shake and vac years ago when it was like 40p for a stores own brand and I lived in a studio flat.

Now I live in a proper flat and the price is around £1.20 and I need at least 2 bottles a time it works out expensive to do so I never do it.

Online as I thought people recommended bicarbonate of soda and some oils for scent.

What else can be used for scents? I don't buy oils is cheap aftershave good enough or recommended?

It's not really something that you actually need, and it's not great for your vacuum either. If you want a nice smell when you're vacuuming then you can put some essential oil (or your aftershave) on some cotton wool and put that in the vacuum bag, or you can buy scented stick things that you put in there from places like B&M or Savers, they're not expensive.

Shake n Vac isn't a cleaner, it's like fabreeze, just takes the smells away ( or rather masks them)

If you want to spot clean a carpet the best thing I've found is Xanto, a big pink aerosol from £land.
If it is a nice smell, a piece of cotton wool sprinkled with Zoflora, also from £land, tucked into the vac bag does very well.
