opening childs account!? it's a nightmare! please help

Options
Hi all, just wondering if anyone can help or advise on a really daft problem
I'm an exsisting rbs customer and my youngest son has a kids account there too.i went in last week to open an account for my eldest son (age13) took my i.d,bank cards passport etc, took my sons birth cert and passport but they refused to open him an account as we have different surnames (due to divorce and now re-married) to complicate matters further, on his birth certificate i am listed under my maiden name as was not yet married to his father! (confused yet?)
trying to establish a link to my own son is becoming really difficult!
the bank have asked for a copy of my divorce absolute ,absolutly no idea where to get that either (stupidly lost it)
is this going to be the same problem at every bank or are rbs just particularly strict?
He's 13 and just wants a savings account I could understand it if he wanted a mortgage loan and credit card!!!

I would suggest you try HSBC, Nationwide and/or Halifax - both also pay a higher rate of interest than RBS for children's savings accounts

The fact that your son is 13 should mean that he should be able to open an account himself - as long as he can prove his own identity using his passport/birth certificate etc.

I can't see why you should need to prove your own identity..

  • The reason they need it as he needs address id. he can't supply it at that age so they use parents address id - and if you have different surnames they want to show a link between you and your son. This would be the same pretty much anywhere

Yes he can prove his name, but they need address id, which is the parents (hence showing the name link)
  • what about the letter from the benefits agency addressed to your name & address showing that you're getting child benefit for the 13 yr old son in his legal name - I assume this is your ex-husbands surname

this is the scenario at most financial inst when the industry were told to tighten up procedures following 9/11
