hubby plays in a band..... he is a bass player....... and especially over christmas he makes a few extra pennies which come in VERY handy ...lol...

so this could be a good way of upping your income if you are talented musically....

i know people who go out as duos... or solo artists who use backing tapes etc.... earn loads of money as they get paid the same amount as a band....

I do this for a living alongside DJ-ing and Karaoke, which obviously boosts income so if anyone wants any info etc feel free to PM me.

Interestingly my OH was thinking about this. He plays the keyboard pretty well, and although he can't sing (at least not at all well!) my sister can sing and enjoys it. We have talked half seriously about them performing at weddings etc. The main question we would have is about insurance- is it necessary/ expensive, and the need forn specialist equipment (speakers etc). Anyone able to advise? Many thanks, sarah

I did this as a Bass Player in a few bands in my 20s but now I've reached 40 and have kids and a night job I've long since packed it in.But I can highly recommend it.Its great to get paid for something you enjoy doing and although I did'nt get much profit out of it (most spent on booze and fags) the memories of those times are priceless.

I played in a restaurant doing jazz background music for £12 an hour last summer, was good for me :) Not sure how you'd do it full time, this was just a one-off.

My daughter is in a rock band she plays lead guitar and sings.
They are at the moment are practising every week at a local recording studio which costs an arm and a leg would love to know how to do the pub scene to earn a bit of cash but unsure of how to make the break.
They have done a few gigs for charity events have also won a battle of the bands competition they do have a gig booked for 6th nov at a local pub any info gratefully received.

If you want to teach your instrument, just put an ad in your local music shop - it should be free. DD did this for a few years, nice, easy little earner.

Just tell the band to go around all the pubs/clubs in their local area ,who normally put on live music, and ask for a booking. For gigs further away they might want to employ an agent, but then the agent will want his cut.
