But our council landlord just says we need to keep the windows open being as it's probably condensation, even when it's freezing, plus we did that anyway . So the only solution atm is for us to apply anti mould paint & hot wash bedding/wipe down walls/floors regularly & hopefully that'll combat the spores.
Get yourself a low energy dehumidifier.0 -
Thank you Jennie & Cisco,
Yes, a mattress would be acting like a sponge. I was planning on getting a mattress protector to hopefully prevent mould, but obviously that isn't guaranteed.
A dehumidifier does sound like a good idea while we challenge our council landlord. Are there any which you'd recommend under £100 please?0 -

Having spent time in a hospital last year, where mattresses for everyone are completely covered in a plastic covering (to prevent it growing things or becoming infected with any fluid loss I'd imagine) I can say they are really not so comfy to sleep on. I was getting night sweats every night due to the heat they created as were most of the other patients. They are not something I'd want to repeat- also, be aware that waterproof mattress protectors (rather than a completely covered matteress) will still offer any mould a nice warm place to grow as the sides are not protected in a water proof film, with the added problem of there being reduced chance of any damp caught within the mattress being able to air and dry out.
I'd really put your money and time into getting the mould sorted, spend your money on phone calls to the CAB, Shelter and whomever else you can call to get the Council to provide a safe place for you to sleep at night. If something is making you ill or at risk of making you unwell, it is not a safe space to sleep.0
