Advice on avoiding delivery problems

Over the Christmas period this year 4 parcels delivered to my home have gone missing (sent via two different delivery companies). Its frustrating to lose goods and its really time consuming to then try to resolve these problems. I don't plan on getting parcels delivered to my home now and will look at other options. Does anyone have any useful advice on how to avoid these kinds of issues (where buying something local isn't an option)?

I’ve bought items online where you can have them delivered to a corner shop & then pick them up at my convenience.
Presumably you can’t have packages delivered to your place of work.0 -
Have them delivered to a friend / neighbour / relative who you know will be in when the delivery is due?
Some firms have a choice of carriers. May be worth checking if you can pick one with a better local reputation (Yodel have a bad rep generally, but around here they're great, and often my first choice)0
