    Also, if you have no power, starches that will swell and effectively cook in cold water are handy: tabbouleh and white rice will both do this (most people don't know about the rice).

    I agree with Mr BE - his posts are brilliant for beginners and for those who haven't cooked a certain dish that is on his list. I've been cooking for years but the Chicken and Leek pie challenge was a godsend of a thread for me.
