A ported mortgage in 2 parts ending a year apart (advice needed plz)

Hi all,
I would like some advice if possible.
We have a ported mortgage with Clydesdale bank. When we moved home we borrowed more in order to secure our new / bigger home.
Clydesdale agreed to this but the existing (bigger chunk of our mortgage) finishes in 2019. The remainder (smaller amount) finishes 1 year later in 2020.
However, the std variable it goes onto is quite high and will mean that we will be around £200 minimum out of pocket with these changes (once the fixed ends).
Normally I would fix again but I'm unsure this time. What is my best option? Can I possibly get the first part (bigger chunk) and just remortgage for 1 year? I'm thinking this would allow both mortgages to align up again date wise and then I can go and do a complete all market mortgage search and get a good deal again. This way I would avoid the big rise too.
But are 1-year mortgages common? and cheap!?
Has anyone had experience with this type of mortgage/timings/increase etc.
Thanks
