Clothes Drying

  • We're in a very small rented flat and don't use any heating (except the fab Victorian stone pig hot water bottle if sitting for any length of time, and in evenings, at night), and although we've a cupboard with the boiler in that is sort of an airing cupboard, I try only to use the hot water once or twice a day, so the airing cupboard isn't particularly warm.
We have a really good, modern, efficient tumble-dryer and I simply try to use it as efficiently as possible, and to wash things only when they need washing - ie most things worn against our skin is washed after one wearing, but other things are washed less often, depending on whether they need washing rather than on a kneejerk reaction. Lots of things rarely need washing if I'm careful with food and hang things up to air and so on.

Also, the flat when we moved in had a minor damp problem - we've nearly eliminated that without heating, partly because the windows front and back are opened wide for 3 minutes at least virtually ever single day to air the place. Even when we were both in bed with lurgies, we "changed the air" as it used to be called, just wrapping ourselves up and re-filling the stone pig, and honestly in five minutes you'd not have known the difference except that that room was sweet and fresh.
