Having to pay to freeze gym membership

I've had to freeze my gym membership because of an injury and can't resume exercise until I've recovered from surgery, yet I'm being charged a monthly "freezing" fee of £12. Is it legal for them to do this under disability legislation, even if I'm only temporarily "disabled"?
I assume that you pay £12 instead of the normal monthly fee?
If so, then I suspect that this is not a fee to "freeze" membership. Instead, it's a reduced fee to reflect lower usage of the facilities offered.
Are there no facilities at all you can use e.g. pool, sauna etc?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Are there absolutely no facilites you can use at all?
e.g. if you have hurt your foot then can you use the chest press, pull downs and free weights for your arms?
Obviously some injuries may prevent you doing anything at all but if it's isolated they may be able to design a program for you.
Just a thought.0 -
At Cannons gyms you can suspend your membership at no charge for 3-12 months for pregnancy & serious illness/injury as long as you have been a member there for three months.
Years ago, my (now ex)gym wanted to change my "pool only" membership to a "tennis only" membership during their pool renovation. They couldn't seem to understand why a 6-month pregnant woman might not relish the chance of taking up tennis! They just kept going on about how I was being offered a "higher value" alternative! Hmmm.
Primrose, I hope your injury heals soon.0 -
Yes, I am a member at Cannons and have twice suspended my membership (mx 12 mths) for two pregnancies without charge. They normally charge £10 pcm to suspend.3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

If the charge applies to everyone who wants to freeze their membership due to temporary incapacity, then it's not sex discrimination.
I know that. I'm applying the same logic as the OP. Read my post I get fed up when people use the DDA and other discrimination acts when it is not relevant to their situation.
BTW I've been a member of Cannons and they were very fair with their membership conditions compared to other gyms I've been a member off. No 12 month contracts and long notice periods to leave plus very fair when I was injured and couldn't use it.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
