    Unless you can show the tenancy was formally ended before the end of the 6 month then you're out of luck. If you have any proof it was then you can fight the charge.
    I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

  • I have email proof that i ended the tenancy short with notice, but was contracted to pay rent so not sure how that works...

    Just personal details employment etc. I filled in my name email and comments about my payment with time stamps as per but that’s as much as they will be getting.

    As you had a tenancy for 6 months minimum you remain liable for the council tax until the end of the tenancy (even if not resident) - if the tenancy ended early your council tax liability would cease at that point.

    There is no legal requirement to do so unless the information is requested under reg 36 of the council tax (administration and enforcement) regs 1992.
