4 hard credit searches at once?

Ok so NatWest did a soft credit search on our mortgage application last week and came back fine, that was done on Experian and Yesterday we received our “offer subject to valuation” YAY! But then I’ve just checked my clear score and noticed they have done 4 hard credit searches, does this sound right? I was expecting 1, maybe 2 but not 4! it’s made a bit of an impact on my score so I’m hoping they don’t later decide to pull out for what ever reason

Your score is neither here nor there since no 1 else can see it, you sure they are all hard searches and not a soft search.
  • Yeah this is exactly what it says

“Hard search performed by NatWest intermediary soloutions for credit application”

How many addresses have you had in the last three years?

  • I may wrong on this. But from my pas experience from working for a High Stret bank they way the system is set up, it is very easy to get too many credit searches done. For example customer application is input and the NEXT button is pressed that triggers credit search.
Then you realise some mistake was made on a previous screen, or you had to ammend something such as rate date which has expired, you need to go back to the screen previous to the credit search one, meaning to proceed after the system will force you through credit search screen.
There was however a process to contact some department who can delete the records for excessive credit searches.
So ones your mortgage is done and dusted you may want to check with Natwest if they would be able to delete extra searhes from your credit file.
  • Thank you very much for that that makes sense, it’s a shame that’s how the system works as the customer suffers from this but if they are willing to remove some searches when the mortgage is complete then that will be fine

It’s more the fact that if they didn’t offer the mortgage and I had to look else where to apply but with that many searches would make it become impossible to get accepted. Unless it’s a trick they pull to prevent you shopping else where?

Call them and ask them to remove the additional searches, problem solved.

It just happens somtimes unfortunately - human error. I've had it happen with 3 different banks on 6 different occasions over the years- the most was 5 searches when there was supposed to be one. HSBC have been the worst offenders for it in my expereince so far (they've done it every time I've had to be credit searched by them) and they are also the most unco-operative in getting them removed - I steer clear of them now as a result. I was annoyed the first two times it happened but since it's easy to resolve (unless it's HSBC) I don't bat an eyelid now.
