handkerchiefs or tissues?

  • Ive got some tiny older hankies made of 'nice' cotton - soft, quite thin, not squeaky, pretty designs or corners. I use them if I can find them but they get lost easily, then turn up again. I used to keep one always under my pillow until some practice husband said it was gross.

My local bargain shop sells packs of hankies for a pound or two, they are the squeaky not-pure cotton ones, theyre ok but a bit scratchy.
I dont use hankies for blowing nose though, only dabbing!! :)

I use both, but only use tissues when I've got a proper streaming cold, one of those where you go through a box of tissues in a day. The rest of the time, hankies are more absorbent, and just go in the ordinary wash.

It's an area where planning ahead is needed - new ones take several washes before they start to soften, so if you're buying cotton hankies it's worth breaking them in before you really need them. If you make your own from worn-out pillow-cases or shirts, then they'll be fine.
  • Out and about I use cotton hankies, which I find in bargain/charity shops. I start a clean one as required. Round the house i use old sheets/pillow cases cut into squares. I wash them at 60° on their own when I have enough.
If I have a cold I use loo roll .
OH thinks hankies are disgusting and germ ridden and insists on tissues, though he will use a few yards of loo roll if at home ( which he then generally leaves on the bedside table or throws at the bin and misses!). When cooking he usually uses pieces of kitchen roll as "man-size" tissues. (these he usually manages to bin successfully, though I have once or twice found suspects deposited amongst the mountain of dirty dishes he creates when doing his Jamie Oliver impression).

Hankies here too, I do have tissues for the odd sneeze or nose wipe but if we have colds then hankies are best. I’ve got about 20 mannsized ones.

When DD1 recently had a cold she phoned me in a panic and said “I have no hankies, why did you let me move out without hankies” - needless to say I’ve brought a few sets to go in her Christmas stocking (family bargains had 4 for £1)

Handkerchiefs can usually be bought quite cheaply at the 'after Christmas sales'

I keep a packet of tissues in my bag for emergency runny noses/loos with no loo roll/mucky hands etc. But for a proper cold it's cotton hankies all the way, much kinder to sore noses just chuck them in the normal white wash, what's not to like.
