Do-able Commute to work

Used to do 98 round trip miles a day in my previous job (3 hour commute) - if it was very good money I would have kept it but transport costs ate into my budget and ended up in a car accident due to mechanical failure (week after MOT pass).
Quite enjoyed the job but needed to work more locally for many reasons, one of them being more free time (and didn't mind taking a pay cut) and secondly I felt my social networks breaking down locally due to lack of time and working in a different country! Now I work more locally, I am getting to know so many people and feel more connected to the community.0 -
My current commute is about 15 mins by car on the main roads but only if I leave early, otherwise it's a lot longer as traffic is always a nightmare but less than 10 miles each way. Prior to this about 20 miles each way on country roads - nice scenery and some lovely villages, but a bit dodgy on narrow roads at times especially in winter.
Happy with my current commute, I have a small economical car and it's a fairly easy journey. Plus, I get home at a sensible time in the evenings.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

About 45 minutes from leaving my house to arriving in work (so allowing time for parking and getting in) is my top limit0

The longest commute I had was minimum two hours each way but with unreliable trains involved it was often up to six hours in total. I did it for around seven months before I moved house (then five months later the company went bust and I had to the same commute the other way round
) and while it was hard going, it was worth it at the time as I needed more experience in the field.

About 40/45 minutes for me, am looking to move closer so its drastically cut to say 15/20 minutes or even 10 minutes would be great, majority of the drive is motorway.0

2 hours each way over multiple buses. 5am wakeup never late unlike those who lived walking distance .

This thread reminds me of this article about a guy who lived and worked in London, and decided to move to Barcelona and commute...!! https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/aug/11/commuting-from-barcelona-a-london-worker-who-makes-it-pay
I have generally always had long commutes - if the pay is good enough and you enjoy the job, it's not a problem. As someone has already said, it can help you get in the mindset/unwind. However, if you aren't happy in a job, it becomes another trigger to leave.
I currently work 2 miles from home, and even with a young family, sometimes find myself with almost too much time in the evenings!!0 -
I was made redundant in May, started a new job a week later but it is an hours drive away longer if the black country route is heaving! Personally I would not recommend it! I am looking for work closer to home especially after the recent snow where I was unable to get the car out of my street and a lack of public transport. My saving grace there was I work in education so the site was closed but I wouldn't have made it in. What will you do if you have car trouble? Can you get there without a car? More to consider than fuel and wear and tear0

I worked shifts in my previous job and it was six miles each way, 15-20 minutes. The company then relocated and the commute changed to 26 miles each way which I allowed an hour for as I had a punctuality and attendance bonus.
I decided to leave what with it being a driving job anyway and shifts. I'd sometimes finish at 23.30 and then had a good 45 minute drive home plus I could have just driven 150 miles as part of the job. It was just too much, a couple of times I struggled to keep my eyes open.
I now live 2.2 miles from work which is eight minutes drive. I sometimes cycle in the spring\summer and walked once. The downside is that my car only just warms up when I'm about 400 yds from work lol
Hats off to anybody driving an hour or more each way, I certainly couldn't do two hours each way. I think an hour would be the maximum I'd want to do, the salary would have to reflect any commute for me0 -
I think it depends on what you are looking for. If it’s a work life balance then I’d say a 2 hours commute is too much to take on.0
