I have to say that it seems to me that HMRC's requirement for a letter to be obtained from another section of the same organisation seems utterly ridiculous and to add insult to injury when they have erroneously claimed a large sum of money from a taxpayer.

    Couldn’t agree more!

It occurs to me that the OP might like to refer the matter to his MP.

Good idea - I will email my MP.

And a quote from a judge in an upper tribunal case (different subject but still highlights the state of HMRC):-

"A sorry tale of HMRC's institutional incompetence and inefficiency"

Got a response from my MP today, she has written to the Chief Executive of HMRC. Not that I think it will change anything in my particular case but I can at least hope it might help someone else in the future to avoid ending up in the same situation... one can wish anyway :-)
  • Update: got a call from HRMC with reference to the letter my MP sent. They will look into it. Fingers crossed now....

Gosh, isn't it funny how competent a group can become when contacted by an MP?

One would hope that it will not be long before MPs become p***** o** by having to deal with what should be straight forward issues & actually get someone to deal with it.

Whilst I appreciate that MPs do not actually deal with this carp themselves, they may well be paying for the time of the person that is & would far rather they were dealing with something else, rather than something that should not have come their way in the first place.

Is it too much to hope that you also received an apology?:)
