Going from Private Sector to a Public Sector Job..

Wouldn't mind of these cushty little public sector jobs filling in forms/admin etc.
I hear in the media of people leaving the public sector because of pay etc but the jobs i've seen pay ok and are within my expectations.
How easy is it to make the transfer from Private to Public? I hear a lot of these jobs are just advertised because they need to under law but usually go to someone internally, is this true or a myth?
Welcome feedback on this guys, thanks

Re your last question, not all employers will be the same, vacancies will be advertised and filled when the right candidate is found whether its an external candidate or internal.0

There is no legal obligation to advertise jobs externally.
Public sector departments are underfunded and often understaffed. Not sure how "cushty" you would find that working environment. What department(s) are you looking at?0 -
I did the opposite direction...finding job in the private sector far more cushty than the Public Sector and Pay was not even one of the top three reasons I left!
Jobs advertised externally had normally already exhausted the internal advert process so they are real0 -
Good to hear the myth dispersed about the job advertisements being their for token reasons.
Looking maybe at admissions? Processing applications for University's etc.
Customer service/logistics background so super resilient to stress and fast pace ... not sure how I would tie in my experience to their application. Planning, diary management, organisation are my main skills - any suggestions what kind of departments where these skills will be best suited too?0 -
No idea about perm but temp is easy to come by. If you like to be poorly paid but lots of annual leave?. The council also don't hide the same 30 second wrap up as private if in a phone based role.
In the private sector, working for a company at the busiest time of Christmas, the handshakes today and various other times of this month and eye to eye contact and compliments, I wouldn't swap for the world.
A comparison for you - bottom rung - a salary of 14.5 compared to 17.5 in the same Essex town inside of a year. Both temporary - 5 hours difference of the working week into it.
I'm sorry I never asked my 'council' friend how long they achieved.0 -
Not all public sector jobs are cushy.. some services deal with desperate people with nothing to lose. People under pressure that can be abusuve, aggressive and at times violent. Add to that austerity measures, pay freezes and cuts to services and it’s a bit less cushy.
Just putting the other side of the coin0 -

Yup, I'd be avoiding customer facing roles. Although you'd be surprised how many sociopaths you come across in the private sector where there is big money on the line people get angry.
In the office based roles do they have KPI's now? I know they didn't use too. Without sounding cocky I think I would smash any productivity stats in the public sector.0 -
I wouldn't worry about it. If you want a cushy job filling in forms and doing admin for good pay, you won't last two seconds in the public sector, because there aren't any. I am so looking forward to the post about how you avoid avoid getting sacked in the public sector. Assuming you ever get in, which I doubt.0

Yes. And surely it depends on the role. Yes some you may be able to smash but the public sector has many and varied roles (as does the private sector).
I’m lucky. I have only been physically assaulted twice in 20 years, not everyone frontline has been so fortunate.0 -
I worked in the civil service in the 80s, and looking back it does seem like a bit of a skive now. However, in more recent times I've gone into a few different government departments as a consultant and it now seems far more stressful.
The departments I worked with had all introduced hot desking as well, which was pretty unpopular, as people had nowhere to call their own.0
