had a mortgage 1993-96 - but who with?

Just can't remember who it was with. Is there some kind of "who was my mortgage with" websearch facility or summink?

No there isn't. Can you remember which building you went into to arrange the Mortgage. Even if its no longer under the same use you may be able to trace the company back from the address.

I remember being told I had to have PPI but no idea if I took it or not!!!0

MPPI bought direct from the lender would be a standalone monthly premium plans (how MPPi should be set up which is one of the reasons most MPPI complaints fail).
However, most mortgages in the UK use mortgage brokers, advisers and estate agents. They are the ones that put insurances in force and the lender won't know what insurances you had.
