Job Evaluation

I am currently employed as an Administrator within my organisation but I am now in an untitled Office Manager role, when I started I was responsible for admin and finance for 1 department, and now I am in charge of all office management for the whole organisation, including HR, payroll, partnership liason, client meetings etc the list of my duties is endless. I do enjoy and do not mind the extra work but it angers me that there are other people in the organisation that have less responsibility than me and get paid a hell of a lot more.

I emailed my boss yesterday and asked for a Job Evaluation as I feel that my role has changed dramatically since starting 2 years ago and that there is a wage parity in the organisation with others being paid more than me despite having less responsibilities.

I received a response today asking me to proceed with caution as

"A job evaluation may have an outcome that recommends that a post is over-paid and possibly put you on detriment. (Notice to reduce your salary). An increase in salary usually occurs when the post holder has undertaken an " increase in responsibility" not necessarily an increase in volume of work."

I am absolutely gutted that I have been threatened with a reduction of salary. I am responsible for a team of 10 and I am on a salary of £18,000 a year!

How should I proceed with this? Thank you for any advice.

You say you’re in charge of HR, payroll etc, is this as a management function or admin, clerical? Do you have budgetary control are you responsible for terminations and such like?

  • How are you being threatened with a salary reduction? The part that mentions that is a common sense statement.

Do you know if there are similar roles within your industry and how much they pay? That might be a bit of leverage for you.

My personal take on this, is that if your wages haven't risen for increased work then the company is onto a winner. if your role has changed significantly and your responsibilities have changed significantly, then you should be on more.

If they are saying that it's only volume and not responsibility, then I think I'd ask to go back to office admin post, as it sounds as if it doesn't pay much less!

It's down to how far you want to push it. If you genuinely feel that you have good reasons for a pay rise, then pursue it and be prepared to move if it goes Pete Tong.

If you don't pursue it, I suspect the job will be soured by resentment.

I don’t read it as being a threat to reduce your salary - I read it that a job evaluation (not specifically yours though) may result in a salary decrease but conversely may result in a salary increase.

Personally I would keep a log of what you do & how often you do it - then you’ll be armed with facts that you can present at your job evaluation.

Then I’d get salaries for comparable roles so you know what the market rate is....which will give your employer an idea of how much they’d have to pay if they had to replace you.

Friendly negotiation is the key here.

You haven't been "threatened" with anything of the sort. This is simply a standard warning that one of the possible outcomes could be a reduction - it's not simply a one way street upwards, or even that things will stay the same. "May" does not mean "will".

As to how you should proceed, and now you know the risks, if you think you have a strong case, go ahead. But you need to be sure that you have actually increased your responsibilities, rather than simply got busier. Furthermore, you need only to look at your own role, rather than comparing it to what others do, and what you're think they're paid.

To paraphrase what has offended you so much, be wary that any complaint motivated by jealousy or sour grapes might backfire on you....

It's exactly the same as "The value of your investment may go up or down", a simple statement of fact, not in any way a threat.
