More than one Graduate scheme?

Hoping someone can help. I'm currently on a Graduate scheme for a large company. After I have finished, am I allowed to do another Graduate scheme with another/different company? My thoughts are that it might depend on the other company and whether you had to have graduated recently (within 2 years of starting for example) but wondered if anyone had direct experience of doing more than one? Many thanks

Initially it will depend on the eligibility criteria for the scheme, which will vary from scheme to scheme. You may be eligible, you may not - no-one knows.

However, even if you are eligible to apply, there's no guarantee you'll be successful - you'll be competing with a year or two's worth of more recent graduates than yourself, plus your peers, and competition's going to be tough.

Furthermore, company 2 might not be too keen on offering you a place on its scheme given you gave up on the scheme from company 1 - why hasn't the graduate scheme you're on resulted in a permanent position once the scheme comes to an end?
  • Why would you want to? Most grad schemes are there to take you from raw grad to some middle'ish level in a couple of years. Why do you want to start at the bottom again?
  • Thanks both.

Yes, it was just a thought. I still have 8 months left on my current one (2 years in total), and won't be leaving before it finishes so it won't be giving up. I am just not sure it's the industry I would like to be in for my career and I was considering another Grad scheme as I would have no experience in another industry and effectively would have to start from the bottom again. It's just a consideration for now, I am hoping I can try out a new role within the company I work for at the moment.

Also, this one will result in a permanent position - and a good one with more pay/higher seniority. It's just deciding whether this is what I want to do.

    Many thanks again

    Do you have transferable skills?

I would consider sticking in the industry for 2-3 years and then looking elsewhere, but with a lot of experience and skills that would stand you in good stead.
  • Yes I would say I have many transferable skills, from my degree, a placement year and from the Graduate scheme so far. You're probably right, I think my first port of call is to try a different role with the company I currently work for. They're pretty big, so lots of opportunities. Just have to find one!
