Northern Rock just sent me £12 - any ideas why?

I redeemed my Northern Rock mortgage many years ago, but out of the blue got a cheque for £12. Any ideas why? I've not had any reason to call them or ask for it. Such a small amount seems strange to have even sent it out.

  • You'll need to ask them.

Could be any number of reasons - an overpayment, an erroneous fee, an interest error, whatever - but whichever one it is, they're obliged to return it, not just keep it.
  • I called; turns out they just did a recalculation, and sent out the difference. They didn't explain why they'd done that five or six years after I closed my account.
