Reference for new job concern

Hi all Ive been accepted and offered a new job as Im being made redundant with over 10 years in my current job. I was dismissed from a job some 14 years ago before my current job, I wasnt well and was going through a lot of stress at the time. My new employers I'm due to start with soon have strict screening and vetting. I have NO CCJ's or black marks on my file and credit score is great. I have no Convictions either but in the interview they asked if I was every dismissed. I said no. Do you think this will come to light 14 years ago? My current employment of over 10 years should be fine ? Or will they ask for more references??? As I have bene in this job over 10 years will they want more than one reference or 10 years service good enough?
Many thanks

It's impossible to say, but as it was only one employment ago it's possible they will ask for references from that employer. I would think it unlikely, but not impossible.
Too late now, but it's always better to be upfront than to be caught out later.0 -
I agree. In such circumstances lying is always a bad idea. Well, actually, it's just always a bad idea, but you had a perfect story to tell that wouldn't be a problem - ten years ago you were ill, dismissed on the basis of capacity, now well, no problem! Certain dismissals, like this, are not usually considered to be important at this late stage - it might be relevant if it was recent / your last job, or if you hadn't recovered, but you had nothing to hide. Which is the stick, because now if it does come back to you, what comes back is the lie, not the dismissal.
On the basis that it may come back, you may want to think about rehearsing a plausible version - your employer "let you go" because you were sick, they said it was something to do with capacity, you don't recall them ever mentioning the word "dismissed" and you thought that you only got sacked if you did something wrong? In other words, play stupid. Providing, of course, that there are no further alternative versions for them to find out (i.e. you have told us the whole truth here!).0 -
Its not worth lying. IF you get away with it you will have to maintain it for the rest of your time there with the possibility of them somehow finding out one day. 6 degrees of separation.0

I forgot to mention I had 2 jobs after the dismissal before entering this job ) been there 10 years ) I mentioned I was unwell for this period ill health. They didnt ask why I left that so might not have to go to them for a reference but the 2 jobs in between is hard to get reference from as they have now demolished the buildings and cease trading ? surely over 10 years in this job will be fine and give them a character reference ?its not one employment ago but 3 employments ago ? hope this helps and thanks for the advice0

The chances that your new boss will approach a firm you worked for over 10 years ago are slim.
The general consensus is that by the time 10 years have passed since you worked there, noone would remember you, so requesting a reference would be pointless.Never Knowingly Understood.

Makes sense that reply thanks also this ( dismissal ) job in question I have an old manager that can give a reference allthough they actually dont work there any longer would that be ok ?
Current job - 10 years - ( being made redundant
previous job 6 months
previous job 6 month
previous job 3 years ( dismissed or in my case walked out ill health lost the plot what ever put it as )
previous job 3 years ( made redundant )
so surely this job of 10 years is more than enough I can supply p45s p60s showing I did actually do those jobs as well ?
Thanks again0
