To quote my dad, if you think it's a scam just bail - by the time you're certain it is a scam, you've already lost the money!
I had already supplied bank details as that seems to be a fairly standard way of paying on SHpock.
I've worked out how to check feedback for another user and this one appears to have issues. As a seller they take money and items get lost and as a buyer they basically never pay, one feedback mentions waiting 4 weeks for a promised payment. I definitely dodged a bullet.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Do you use a separate bank account for transfer payments? We have an account just for that, so if someone gets the details with the intention to try and steal money they can't do anything with it as the account is almost always empty. But from the sound of it the whole point was to get you to hold the item for them. Maybe they sell something similar on another account?

I use the bank I use mainly for business, no one can steal my money , all they can do is set up a direct debit to a charity . If they did set up a DD my bank write to inform me, and anyway I would notice as I log in most days. I would also be covered by the DD guarantee, so I have no worries there.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. That was quite funny when someone setup a DD. Showed us what could be done which is very little and easily claimed back.
Even family members were rather reluctant to give me their account numbers to transfer money to them. I said every cheque you have written will have the number on.
Every shop you used your debit card in will have shown the checkout operator your account number.
Well my account number is on my Halifax card, not sure about other banks but assume the account numbers there?

I had someone on Shpock lecture me in bite sized chunks of text, about how unsafe a bank transfer was and how I should always insist on paypal as they cover me for everything. Apparently I am completely safe on paypal there is no way I can lose money and I should even take it for collection only items as it means I won't get time wasters who don't turn up. They had bought something and wanted it posted, I have a cut and paste saying I take paypal or bank transfer and to let me know which details they wanted. It was a semi rant really, obviously well rehearsed trying to educate sellers into not be scammed as if a scammer has my bank details then any bank will allow them to transfer money if they phone up and quote the bank details to them. When I responded them they told me that their brother was very senior in a bank and he told them that this is how banks work - and my point about cheques was wrong as they always had a different number and not the real bank number (I might have got confused at that point).
They never did pay, not even by paypal and I had to cancel sale and relist. It was all very odd.
Incidentally, there was a recent thread on the vents board here on MSE (I think it was that board) when someone else stated that paypal was much better for collection only items on ebay than cash - using the same example that it means no time wasters.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. You NEVER send any goods by post until;
1) you actually speak to the buyer over the phone and they haven't witheld their phone number
2) you see the money in your bank account first
3) if the buyer won't verbally speak and makes demands for your personal info, then walk away
I learned the hard way by trusting someones word on Shpock........big mistake!0 -
