Background check Civil Service

Hey all,

Iv'e recently got a temp job with the civil service that is due to start in January. Before i start the job i have been told that there will be a background check.

Im a little bit worried about this because i have a spent conviction for common assault from a few years ago. Does anyone have any experience with applying for the civil service who could offer some advice as to whether this will prevent me from working there?

Did they ask you if you’d had any previous convictions? Do you know what sort of background check they’re completing? What’s the job?

No one has asked yet but i think they do a standard DBS check, ill find out tomorrow. The job is a 6 month temp contract at the NOS.

Yes they would do only a standard check but I am afraid this would show a spent conviction.

A DBS check will still show spent convictions but it does include the concept of filtering where by certain convictions no longer show after a period of time. Common assault is part of the filtering list, however it will remain on your DBS for 11 years assuming you were over 18 when you received it and it was a conviction and not a caution.

My recommendation would be to be upfront and honest about it, it's all you can do.
