Do I need to declare to HMRC the cheque they sent?

Options
HMRC sent me a cheque as an adjustment for overpaid taxes in 16-17. Do I need to state this in my 16-17 Self Assessment or is it unnecessary as they already have it in their records? The notes for the tax offset section seem to suggest I need not as I have received it before filing my initial self assessment whereas I would need to if I had submitted before receiving the cheque. Is that right?

You need to show it in the tax already refunded for the year box. Not sure why they have refunded you when you are Self Assessment.

Having given it more thought, it depends what the repayment was for. If it was for overpaid PAYE for example and HMRC sent you a calculation then you should show it.

If it was because you made a claim to reduce your payments on account then no need to show it.

I do Self Assesment on top of PAYE for extra income. I did not make a claim or in any way inititiate this.

So did they send you a P800 tax calculation for 16/17?

Yes, I received a P800. The cheque was to the amount on the last line "HMRC owes you" under the Result section.

You will need to show it in your Tax Return then
  • Is anyone else struggling with HMRC issuing a P800 when the op is under self-assessment?

OP does say it is their initial self-assessment so I assume means first time so perhaps P800 issued before Tax Return? That said it is not unheard of for P800's to be issued in SA cases

Well, yes, P800 issued before Tax Return. I haven't submitted my return yet hence my question. The P800 and cheque came last month. The P800 is not a response to my self assessment if that was the question.

I will show it. It does make sense to show it when reviewing the calculation at the end. They've sent me a cheque, which I have yet to give to bank but nonetheless, so it should be part of the offset in the calculation. It's just a little bizarre as on the main portal page before the self assessment form HMRC confirms they have sent me a cheque stating the amount but then leave it to me to tell them this myself when they already know it.
